Supply MMDAs With Prepaid Meters-Minister Tells ECG

Mr John Alexander Ackon, the Ashanti Regional Minister has passionately suggested to the Electricity Company of Ghana,(ECG) that they supply Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, (MMDAS) with prepaid meters so as to ensure they pay for the power they consume.

This, he stressed would help the ECG to recover monies they put in the distribution of power to these government facilities.
Addressing a stakeholder meeting in Kumasi to discuss the new tariff which was introduced last year by the ECG through the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission,(PURC) Mr Ackon called for support from the MMDAs to enable the power company function properly.

”If our ministries, agencies and departments are supplied with these prepaid meters they could pay for what they consume since they could only work when they had power”, the Minister noted.

MMDA’s:
The Minister said, ‘if the Metropolitan and Municipal as well as Districts Assemblies are given these prepaid meters they would be forced to cut waste and pay for the power they want to consume’.

He noted the ECG could serve its numerous customers well if they got monies owed them by these MMDAs.

According to him, MMDA’s across the country consume large amounts of power, and maintained if they are forced to pay for what they consume the monies could be used to support operations of the ECG.

APPEAL:
The Minister, therefore sought the support of the general public and admonished the payment of the right kind of tariff so as to ensure good services were rendered to them by the power distributors.

Mr Ackon insisted the ECG could work more effectively with the right kind of tariff, adding the company could only use the monies they are able collect to develop its installations to ensuring regular power distribution.

ECG:
Speaking to journalists at the sidelines of the stakeholder meeting, Mr Erasmus Kyere Baidoo, Ashanti Regional Public Relations Manager for the ECG called for the payment of the right tariff for power consumption.

He disclosed the company uses such funds to fix all challenges relating to distribution, adding ECG is determined to give constant, consistent and cheap power to households and factories they serve.
