19 patients across the country with heart -related diseases including a foreigner, have benefited from free cardiac surgery at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi of the Ashanti Region.
The free open heart surgery was conducted by USA- based Cadioster International, with a mission of helping Ghana to develop their cardiac surgery programmes and cardiology through open heart surgery training.
This is the 5th time the group has been at KATH to save lives free of charge.
Ghnewsnow Ashanti regional editor Isaac Justice Bediako who witnessed some of the surgeries at KATH reports that out of 19 cases treated at the hospital, 8 of them were open heart procedures.The Surgeons described some of the cases as very complicated.
A Cardio-thoracic Surgeon at KATH Dr.Isaac Okyere who was among the local team explained that the team has learnt a lot from the exercise.
He expressed hope that the hospital may soon start to perform open heart surgeries in KATH.
‘All the surgeries are very complicated, expensive and very sophisticated so for our people almost for free, we are very excited, we local stuff have the opportunity to improve on our skills,’ he stated.
For a patient to undergo a successful open heart surgery in Ghana, one has to spend at least 10,000 US Dollars which came as a great relief to the 19 beneficiaries.
For this programme to be sustained at KATH, management of the second premier hospital has begun moves to build a cardio-thoracic center for the hospital.
They appealed to corporate institutions, churches, individuals and philanthropists to support the hospital with finances and equipment for the construction of the center.
