E/R: Asesewa SHS Shut Down Over Building Defect

The 12-unit classroom block of the Assesewa Senior High School in the Upper Manya Krobo District of the Eastern region has been shut down as a result of a building defect.

The defect which was identified six months after commissioning in 2012, has forced out administrators, teachers and the over 200 students who were occupying the building.

An engineering firm, Architectural Engineering Service Limited (AESL) who conducted an inspection and evaluated the state of the entire building recommended closure of the block for the contractor to rectify the defects.

The situation has created overcrowding in the school while office accommodation for the teaching staff has become a challenge.

Sources in the School revealed that students and teachers fear to occupy the building over fears of a possible building collapse.

Starr News sources say the Contract for the construction of the building was awarded to a member of the ruling National Democratic Congress.

The problem is set to top the agenda of the next Parents Teacher Association meeting of the school. Some parents have vowed not allow their children return to the building until the problem is fixed.

The Headmaster of the School Samuel Yeboah Gyebi declined comments on the matter when contacted.
