Audio : Akufo-Addo Pays Tribute To The Late Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey
The death of Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey is “very bad news”, the New Patriotic Party’s three-time flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo, has said.
“On my way here today, I got some very bad news and I have to share it with you. A man, who has been a lifelong friend of mine – we grew up together; our fathers worked together for Ghana. They were part of the people, who gathered in Saltpond on the 4th of August 1947 to establish the UGCC from where began our struggle for freedom and independence – he has been lifelong supporter of our party’s tradition and values; recently he has not been well and was flown to South Africa and later to London.
This morning, Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey went to our Lord,” Mr Akufo-Addo told party supporters in Kumasi Sunday.The advertising expert died in London Sunday Morning from an illness.
Mr Obetsebi-Lamptey served as Chief of Staff in the Kufuor administration and later as Minister of Tourism. He is credited with the rebranding of Valentine’s Day as Chocolate Day in Ghana. He is also credited with the introduction of Friday wears in Ghana, as part of measures to promote made-in-Ghana goods. His father was one of the Big Six in Ghana’s political history. In 2007, he run with 16 others in the NPP’s presidential primaries but lost. He was 70.
On December 16 last year, social media got rife with rumours of his death but it later turned out not to be true.
Meanwhile, the party has directed all its flags to fly at half-mast. The governing National Democratic Congress has also issued a statement describing Mr Obetsebi-Lamptey’s death as heartbreaking. Also former President Jerry Rawlings and his wife Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings has expressed their “deepest sympathies” to Mr Obetsebi-Lamptey’s family over his death. attach is audio recording of Nana Addo.
