Millipedes Saga: Palm Oil Producers Give KNUST A Week Ultimatum To Apologize

Palm Oil Producers Association of Ghana (POPAG) has issued a week ultimatum to researchers at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to apologize to the association for publishing what it described as falsehood about their business.

A research by postgraduate students of the university concluded that traders of palm oil have been soaking millipedes in the product in order to change the taste and colour.

The shocking revelation came nearly two months after the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), said it was safe to consume palm oil, following the arrest of some producers who were mixing the product with Sudan IV, a cancer-causing agent.

In an interview with Onua 95.1 FM, Mr Maxwell Nii Konney, President of the (POPAG), threatened to sue the students in the court should the week ultimatum elapse without the apology.

He denied the allegation made by the researchers and called for the need to protect the integrity of the palm oil produced in the country as it formed the source of livelihood for a large number of Ghanaians.

However, a statement issued by the FDA and signed by Hudu Mogtari, the Chief Executive Officer indicated that the authority has commenced an investigation into the claims.
