“EC Boss Action Amounts To Stealing”-Offinso South MP

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Offinso South constituency in the Ashanti Region, Ben Abdalla Banda has stated that the actions by the Electoral Commission (EC) Boss’ Charlotte Osei holding two public positions is tantamount to stealing.

He wondered why the EC Boss’, who is a Lawyer, would have herself entangled with this problem, saying that that it is wrong for her to receive salaries or allowances from two positions.

‘Looking at her background as a Lawyer, not just an ordinary Lawyer, a Lawyer of high repute who to me has practiced and known the law, and for her to have done this, by taken monies from two positions that will be tantamount to appropriating what is not due her, what she is not supposed to be taken. That to be me in plain and ordinary legal language amounts to stealing or dishonesty and misappropriation. It’s a breach of the 1992 constitution,’ he fumed.

The EC’s Boss has been accused of refusing to resign as the Chairperson for the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) and Board Member of Ghana Reinsurance Company, at the time she was appointed by President Mahama as the EC Chairperson.

This, he described Madam Osei’s action as a criminal offence for holding unto two public offices and appropriating salaries and allowances from these two positions.

‘If this issue is being raised, and it’s established and the evidence is clear then, the issue of credibility and dishonesty are at stake. I will even take the issue to a different level, and the level here is this, I will impute some criminality to what she has done, if the evidence is what people are saying it is,’ he said.

Speaking on Ultimate breakfast hosted by Prince Minkah, he accused the President John Mahama for refusing to do due diligence on the EC Boss’ before appointing her.

‘The President didn’t do due diligence and thorough background checks on the EC Boss’, he should have checked if she hasn’t breached any constitutional provision. The President has all the powers at his disposal to have done holistic checks on her but probably it pre-supposes that the President wanted to do her a favour,’ he claimed.

He stated that proper investigation must be done to unravel the truth of the matter.

‘We must not leave the matter down without doing any investigation, it’s a very serious issue legal matter that must be dealt with,’ he said.

He suggested to the EC Boss’ to resign, ‘she has to go if she is facing very negative revelation, we have other EC officials who are equally competent to organise our elections’.
