Ignore calls To Suspend Afoko, Group Petitions NPP Disciplinary Committee

A group of New Patriotic Party (NPP) members calling itself Concerned Grassroots Workers in the Eastern Region have petitioned the Disciplinary Committee of the party to ignore calls by the party’s Council of Elders to suspend National Chairman Paul Afoko from the party.

According to the group, not only do they see the call and the procedure as wrong but also the timing is even more inappropriate.

It said unity within the party had become so critical that, barely 15 months into a crucial election that the party must win at all cost to save both the NPP and the country from total ruin, such a call can only be described as unfortunate and suicidal for the NPP’s victory.

Addressing journalists, Spokes person for the group Eric Tetteh stated that this moment in time when the flag bearer is going round urging everybody to ‘arise and build’ the preoccupation must be to bring onboard even people outside the box not to put aside someone as important as our National Chairman.

He emphasized that in politics, the first thing to do is to get everybody on your side to vote for you before you go seeking for those outside your group, but the call by the Council of Elders defeats this cardinal political principle and makes nonsense of the adage that “Politics is a game of positive numbers”.

“The call by the Council of Elders is certainly not the best, if as a party we’ve found it difficult winning elections on our own strength over the years, it doesn’t make sense to suspend your National Chairman.

Such a move will obviously reduce the party’s chances as the aggrieved supporters of the Chairman may cast protest votes.

If Paul Afoko is pushed aside and the NPP wins, that will mean that the party won the 2016 elections without his contribution and that will be used against him later, that will be unfair”.

He noted that as elders of the party whose wise counsel should be availed to all party members, they are yet to be heard calling to order members of the party including Hon Kennedy Agyapong, Amoako Tuffour and Bugri Naabu who have subjected the National Chairman to all kinds of abuse and even insulted the entire party.
