KUMASI, Ghana- A 47-year-old man accused of defiling a minor has been ordered by the Kumasi Gender Court, presided over by Mrs Rita Agyeman-Budu, to serve 14 years in prison. Kofi Gyamfi was convicted after he had pleaded guilty to the offence. The crime was committed at Afrancho-Bronkong in the Afigya-Kwabre District of Ghana’s gold-rich Ashanti Region. The victim, a school girl, had seen the convict carrying some tubers of yam and offered to help him. Police Chief Inspector Rose Essuman told the court that this happened on March 21 at about 1530 hours. When they got to the house (then empty at the time) with the yams, Gyamfi lured her into the room of a co-tenant and sexually assaulted her. The prosecution said as luck would have it the co-tenant returned in good time to catch the convict right in the act and informed the victims family. A formal report was consequently made to the police and Gyamfi was arrested.
