At least 45 persons have been confirmed dead in a motor accident on the Kintampo-Tamale highway.

The accident, which is said to have occurred near the Kintampo Water Falls, involved a Metro Mass Transport bus with registration number AS 7131 Y.

The bus was said to be travelling from Kumasi to Tamale but rammed into a crossing cow around 8:00pm on Wednesday, February 17.

According to Addai Munumkum, a local journalist  with Kintampo-based Adas FM, police, fire as well as military officers got to the scene in a frantic effort to save lives.

One life was saved but almost all the passengers of the Metro Mass Transport bus did not survive, Addai Munumkum said, with three still trapped in the bus – as of 10:40pm.

The bus after ramming into the cow crashed into an oncoming truck carrying tomatoes from Ouagadougou to Kumasi. One of the passengers on the truck with registration number AS 1514-15, Oppong also known as Company, survived.

The dead have been sent to the Kintampo Municipal Hospital’s mortuary while the sole survivor – as of 10:40pm – is also receiving medical attention at the same hospital.
