40 Arrested In Kumasi For Power Theft

Forty customers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have been arrested for power theft. They were arrested during an exercise organised by the ECG with the assistance of the police to clamp down on illegal connections.

During the exercise, the customers, whose power supply had earlier been disconnected for non-payment of bills, had re-reconnected the power.

Briefing the press in Kumasi Thursday, the Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mr Mohammed Tanko, said the police had been assisting the company to clamp down on the activities of power thieves for some time now.

He said the exercise, which was carried out in Suame, Danyame and Abuakwa district areas of the ECG, saw 40 arrested for power theft and illegal connection.

He said unlike previous exercises where the company allowed the suspects to pay the amount owed with a penalty without prosecuting them, “this time we want the law to take its full course to serve as a deterrent to others”.

Some of the power thieves were arrested at Kokoben, Atonsu Monaco, Asafo, Asuoyeboah, Dompoase and Ohwimase.

The Ashanti Regional Communications Manager of ECG, Mr Erasmus Kyere Baidoo, said customers in the region owed the company more than GH¢100 million.

According to him, the company was taking stringent measures to retrieve all the debt owed it by consumers.

He said the company had been recording lots of losses in the region and all were due to the activities of these power thieves.

Mr Baidoo reiterated that the company was resolved to ensure that those caught in the act of illegal power connection faced the full rigours of the law.

He said the practice was becoming too rampant in the region and it was time the culprits were brought to book.
