Ghana Draws With Canada In International Friendly
The Canucks of Canada held the Ghana Black Stars to a 1-1 drawn game at the Robert F. Kennedy (RFK) Stadium in Washington DC in an international friendly yesterday.
The 2 teams took advantage of the ‘FIFA window’ to test their might against each other. Canada, who go into a CONCACAF Round 4 qualifying duel with Honduras in November chose Ghana, who are also preparing for the next round of qualifiers in their zone (CAF).
The game started on a rather slow note, with the Black Stars dominating the midfield but failing to make any real decisive moves until Marcel De-Jong fired a 30-yarder in the 29th minute to claim the lead for the less fancied Canucks. Albert Adomah levelled for the Black Stars close to the halftime whistle.
Some quick substitutions turned the game around in the second half with Ghana dominating most of the interchange. Canada however showed resilience and came close to scoring several times.
Ghana Coach Avram Grant introduced 4 new debutants; Philemon Ofosu Ayeh who plays in defense for German side Eintracht Braunschweig, Portugal-based Bernard Mensah and the 2 ‘New Yorkers’; Lloyd Sam of the New York Red Bulls and Kwadwo Poku of New York FC filling in for key players like Asamoah Gyan, Andre Ayew, Christian Atsu, Baba Rahman, Jonathan Mensah and Kwadwo Asamoah.
Not to be outdone, Canada boss Benito Floro also introduced 4 debutants; David Junior Hoilett, Wandrille Lefevre, Kianz Foese and Charlie Trafford.
Ghana currently sits at number 24 on the Coca Cola FIFA rankings while Canada is number 104. Pundits believe the Canucks are likely to improve their status in the rankings after holding Ghana to a stalemate.
