The death toll in the perceived ethnic clashes at Tuabodom in the Brong Ahafo Region, has risen to five.

An elderly man believed to have been shot died at dawn on Thursday at the Holy Family Hospital in Techiman where eight injured persons are receiving treatment.

Security has been beefed up with police and military presence following threats of reprisal attacks.

Meanwhile the police say they are yet to pick any suspect.

The clashes erupted on Wednesday afternoon after a man whose name was given as Ali was assaulted on Tuesday night by a group of men believed to have come from the Asante-dominated part of the town.

Reports are that Ali went to ease himself at that part of town, a situation that sparked anger among the Asantes.

The Bonos are said to have retaliated on Wednesday by attacking the Asantes.

Techiman Divisional Police Commander Chief Superintendent Emmanuel Twumasi Ankrah said no arrests have been made but a joint police-military team has been deployed.

He said those who exchanged gunshots were said to have ridden motor bikes and zoomed into the near-by bushes after firing gunshots.

They were all masked, he added, and so made it difficult for people to identify them.

He expressed suspicion that a long-standing dispute between the “northern side” of the town and its “southern side” may be behind Wednesday’s clashes.
